Thumbs up Re: The Southern Times

I may just do that, thanks Mr. Mietzner. Appreciate the gesture, but wouldn't I be entitled to one anyway, since I pay my taxes I may be entirely wrong, but the Southern Times is paid for by the Governments of Namibia and Zimbabwe, right? Even if indirectly, through state-owned enterprises. Maybe you could enlighten us all.

In the meantime, how about an exposé of how ZANU-PF is about to rig the elections in Zimbabwe?

    Dear sir/madam!

I truly admire your impeccable sense of humour.

    Comrade_007,

You really want Mr. Mietzner to join the ranks of the unemployed?

    Uncle Paul,

My first reaction, when I see a telephone number, is to phone. So I phoned Mietzner. He says the paper is available at various retail outlets in Windhoek and at fuel-station shops. A list, he said could be obtained from him. Since I do not want to advertise someone else's product unnecessarily, I suggest anybody who want to know where the paper can be obtained either phone him or visit him at the office ..........

Thank you for the information, Oneword. You are of course perfectly right. Even at my age I should know how to use a telephone.

Pray, where should it run to?

I am not quite sure I understand exactly what you are tryring to portray in your short sentence. If you are referring to the owners, just pick up a copy: Everything is clearly stated on the masthead!

Ps. I got mine from the office ........THAT IS WHY I KNOW!

    Post Re: The Southern Times

The Southern Times is a regional newspaper jointly published by Zimbabwe Newspapers Limited and New Era Corporation of Namibia under NamZim.

    ZIMBABWE NEWSPAPERS

Zimbabwe Newspapers (1980) Limited is the holding Company of the country’s printing and publishing group encompassing newspapers, commercial printing and directory origination and publishing.

The company traces its origins back to 1981, which is when the Herald was founded. On 30 May 1980, the Company changed its name from the Rhodesia Printing and Publishing Company Limited to Zimbabwe Newspapers (1980) Limited, commonly known as Zimpapers. The company was registered on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange on 15 October 1951. The company’s core business is newspaper publishing and commercial printing.

The company was founded in 1980 after the government bought the majority shares from Argus Press of South Africa with a US$ 6 million donation from the Nigerian government. Following the buy-out, the government proceeded to establish the Zimbabwe Mass Media Trust (ZMMT).

According to author and researcher Guthrie Munyuki and MISA-Zimbabwe, ZMMT was established to protect the public’s shareholding, i.e. Zimbabwe Government - in the newspaper stable with the Trust’s major mandate being that of protecting the papers from political interference.

Apparently ZMMT was dissolved in December 2001 to pave the way for another organization called Multimedia Investment Trust (MIT) and the authorities are yet to clarify the legal status and role of MIT.

The Zimbabwe Stock Exchange lists ZMMT and Old Mutual Life Assurance as the major shareholders in Zimpapers. The shareholding structure is as follows:
    • Zimbabwe Mass Media Trust (Zimbabwe Government) – 51.09%
    • Old Mutual Life Assurance – 23.80%
    • Intermarket Nominees – 3.38%
    • National Social Security Authority – 3.10%
    • Zimpapers Pension Fund – 2.28%
    • EFE Securities Nominees – 1.53%
    • Munich Reins, Co of Africa Ltd – 1.04%
    • Edwards Nominees Private Ltd – 11.36
    • NNR& FCA - 0.91%
    • Shara Sheperd – 0.82%
    • Glenhazel Investments – 0.69%
