Exactly my point, Phelakuti - when listening to most Namibian radio stations you may as well be listening to 100,000s stations from all over the world. There is music, news from the wires and a bit lof local news, weather, jingles and ads - that's that. Maybe the owners of the stations are so scared of losing their broadcasting licenses that they don't touch anything controversial in a serious and meaningful way. Anyhow, it says a lot about our society, too, that few people talks about the really controverisal stuff openly and with authority.

Dude, I am not sure how to answer your question. Maybe if a radio station would do what you want it to do, it would soon die off due to a lack of funding. People rarely want to hear bad (objective, controversial) news. Those who want to hear such news usually would not be able to afford to spend money on that. That means fewer advertisers and that means .........vanilla radio!

OK - I see your point. Maybe one should distinguish between public and private broadcasters. Radio 4 and similar stations are public broadcasters, with clear a mandate and a clear mission: To educate and inform the public. I think the NBC does it to a small degree.

But there are also public radio stations like radio 702 in South Africa that are outspoken on current affairs and push the envelope. They kick &"%£^&&^ and make money. Maybe our stations can look for some inspiration there. The format used here is just so predictable and not stimulating.

Talking Re: Talking about radio stations in Namibia

It is nice question, but me personal I may say I do n't fevor any station but rather the program that I like E.g. sport, music, talk show etc. Which means if I tuned to a Radio station and there is my favoirte program in the language that I understand, then I would listen to that station at that time.

In the above list the Fresh FM is not there, and its the one I listen to most nowadays because it is available on line.

You can listen to Fresh FM - as well as most other radio stations listed - right here on The Shebeen. Just click on Launch Player under Radio + TV towards the bottom in the left hand navigation column on the home page.
