4X4 and quad-bikes in the desert
It's about time these hooligans are reigned in. This has been going on for far too long. The fact is that the times when we could go anywhere, any time without any respect for the environment are over. Too much damage has been done, and continues to be done. It is time for action, and I support the Ministry wholeheartedly.
I'm sorry to burst their bubble, but how can it be "fun" to destroy ecologically sensitive areas? To drive over bird nests and destroy eggs; to destroy lichen fields; to leave tracks that remain for years? Never mind the countless lizards and beetles and snakes that perish.
It may be fun for a few individuals, but is it "fun" for the environment and future generations to pay the price for this "fun". I am sick and tired of these idiots poking their middle fingers at us, making noise, pretending they are modern-day heroes.
I say make these areas national parks, close them to ALL traffic except where there are national roads, and provide a small area where these hooligans can have "fun" smashing each other up. Another way: Make every quad-biker and 4X 4 enthusiast pay a licence, a permit, and pay the proceeds into an environment fund to pay for the development of protected areas.
Why are many South African quad-bikers and 4X4 people coming to our coast? Because they know no-one comes and tells them not to behave they way they are. It's like the Wild West. They come, plough and disappear. Sure, they bring money, but is it worth the damage some of them leave behind? Surely not.
Read this and rejoice:
