WINDHOEK – The Meat Corporation of Namibia (Meatco) on Wednesday warned that beef measles have been detected at its abattoir in the capital, and advised the public to eat well-cooked meat to prevent the infection.
In a media statement issued on Wednesday, the company indicated that beef measles is not something new, but the infection has been detected recently in larger numbers in carcasses at its abattoir.
Meatco advised the public not to buy from informal (unregistered) butchers, because the meat may have measles.
“Do not eat raw meat and eat well-cooked meat as cooking will kill measles, and freeze beef for at least three days at a very low temperature before eating it (-18 degrees Celsius),” the statement said .
