SWAPO win Rundu Rural West Constituency
RUNDU - The ruling SWAPO Party Candidate Rosa Kunyanda Kavara overwhelmingly won the Rundu Rural West Constituency by-election that took place yesterday Friday. According to results issued by the Electoral Commission (ECN) after voting ended in the early hours of Saturday morning, Kavara secured 2 614 votes, while the Republikein Party (RP) candidate came second with 377 votes. The DTA got 354, CoD 259, while NUDO got 26. Namibia Democratic Movement for Change (NDMC), which did not formally withdraw from the election, managed to get 27 votes.
After counting ended, it was discovered that one ballot paper had gone missing and the CoD and DTA insisted that the ECN should find that ballot paper or else they would not accept the result. The remaining three Political Parties however agreed that the Electoral Commission go ahead with the ruling which was then endorsed.
A total of 14 300 voters were registered for the election in the Constituency while 3 719 (representing a quarter of the voters) cast their votes in the by-election.
The by-election Returning Officer Thomas Shapi described the election as having been 'free and fair'.
“The election was free and fair, despite that missing ballot paper, there was no intimidation or whatsoever,” said Shapi.
The SWAPO Party candidate Rosa Kunyanda Kavara will now serve as a Councillor for Rundu Rural West Constituency replacing Herbert Shixwameni who resigned in October last year.
