Default Talking about the Namibian Police

The official mission of our police is to "render the necessary quality service, as laid down in the Police Act, with due consideration for the fundamental human rights and freedoms, without compromising in upholding the tenets of law and order, safety and security of all persons.”

What are your thoughts about the service Namibia's police provides? Do you have any other thoughts about, or experiences with, the police you would like to share?

They are doing the best they can under extremely difficult conditions. Inadequate training; inadeqate remuneration, inadequate command structure; inadequate support from public and others .....

The "inadeqacies" just keep on piling up.. You can build a house of the finest materials;it will still crack if the foundation is wrong...............

Oneword, you are making excuses. Most of them can't even read the expiry date on a driving licence at the road block on the way to the airport - but they must stop you and do the Namibian "Does you has a licence, hey???"

Well, it is xtrimly true about the inadequacies for police, and due to this, Police seem to attract non-quality work force if you know what I mean, even heard that most police officers don even have to pass drivers test, as a commander take a whole buncch of them to get licences, based on his single sentence statement, 'these are good to go, I've tested them maself" LOL, else their priority also be what leading politicians want them to do, hence, is there any real justice or law upkeeping in da Nam??

I think the Namibian Police do a pretty good job and that they need more public back-up. They are fine men and women, who some times put their lives at risk, in order for us to sleep safe and peacefully. You will find the odd "rotten apples"
everywhere in society, who spoil the good name of every institution.

Give the Nam Police more training, better sallaries, better and more vehicles, better and more benefits, equal promotion opportunities, greater career benefits and you will see quicker changes.

For know, give the Namibian Police your support and back up and try to understand their situation. Would you cope better in their situation? Do you know how many of them operate dayly with out PTSD counselling?

Give the Namibian Police a break, and be thankful that you have not to perform their dangerous and stressful work on a dayly base.

Remember, when your life are in danger, not the NDF will come out, but the Namibian Police. They are very eager to come, its only, some times there are no vehicles or officers to instruct them. They operate under instruction, for your safety and their safety and numerous other reasons that I have not to lay out now.

    Unhappy Working under difficult circumstances

No doubt - there are many committed, professional, competent and efficient police officers. But there are also many incompetent, uncommitted, dishonest and inefficient police officers. They undermine all the good work that's being done. I'd like to see the latter being called to task publicly and more often than is currently the case. They have to account for their actions and decisions, or asked to leave the force if found guilty of misconduct. I'm not convinced this is the case at present, and many policy officers simply get away with unprofessional conduct. Just the other day I passed through the road-block on the road to the Windhoek international airport. One officer was asleep in his chair, while otheres were chatting away with what looked like locals. They were simply not interested in stopping cars and doing their work. Although there is a clear STOP sign, many cars never stop but simply drive through slowly. That should not be tolerated and is not acceptable. Next time I'll take pictures and ask them for their official police ID's - which members of the public are allowed to do - although I'm not sure that's such a good idea.

    Beautiful Pangkas,

You have just rephrased and reiterated my first post on this so beautifully, tears came to my eyes! Of course they will come out ...... IF they have transport and know how to find your location.
I wholeheartedly agree with Comrade _007 that there are many good apples, but will add, though, that we have a disproportionate number of bad ones in our basket.

    Default Excuses, excuses!

If the Namibian police management would apply better asset management systems and procedures, as well as enforce stricter rules and regulations regarding vehicle use in the force there would be no problem with transportation. The reason they have no vehicles is because their vehicle fleet is misused, poorly maintained and not properly managed. Stop making excuses, and start putting things right is what I have to say to the senior police managers and administrators. You earn fat salaries and now start performing - you owe it to the nation!

One officer was asleep in his chair, while otheres were chatting away with what looked like locals.

Did it ever occure to you that the sleeping officer might do a double shift, since there is a shortage of police officers. Would you like to see the army on duty there? Police officers could perform their routine duty then much better.

They were simply not interested in stopping cars and doing their work.
Although there is a clear STOP sign, many cars never stop but simply drive through slowly.

What about spot-check's? Let sleeping dogs lie. I'm not saying police officers are dogs, but stop nagging with them, if you think they are not proffessional enough, apply for a trainer position and make better police officers out of then or pay a visit to the police Inspector-General in person. I am sure, his office is open to the public.

That should not be tolerated and is not acceptable. Next time I'll take pictures and ask them for their official police ID's - which members of the public are allowed to do - although I'm not sure that's such a good idea.

Make sure your testament is in order, before you take the first picture. They might suspect the camera for a gun and hit you with the iron fist. If you have the power left in you, ask them for their police identity proof.

I did not know that one, Uncle Paul. Where do you get the statistics or are you jumping on(to) conclusions?
