Windhoek — President Hifikepunye Pohamba this week paid tribute to Founding President Dr Sam Nujoma on his 80th birthday.
"On this special day, we join you and your family in celebrating a well-lived life.
We celebrate the exemplary way in which you have dedicated your live to the well-being of our nation, the struggle for national liberation and independence, as well as your steady and decisive role after the attainment of our nationhood," Pohamba said.
The President said he was proud to call Nujoma not only a comrade-in-arms, but also a friend and a brother.
He said the people of Namibia would forever remember Nujoma's historic role in establishing a strong foundation for democratic governance in the country as the Founding President of Namibia.
"Following the attainment of freedom, your vision enabled our country to move forward with a common purpose at a time when the feelings of mistrust and suspicion ran deep in the aftermath of the liberation struggle," said the president.

Pohamba noted that Nujoma's insistence on the promotion of the policy of national reconciliation gave the Namibian people the strength to overcome many challenges during the infancy of democracy.
"Today, we look back with pride that Namibia has remained at peace with her neighbours. We look forward to the future with the confidence that our actions are anchored on the strong foundation that you, Comrade Founding President, has helped to build," Pohamba said on Tuesday.
He said Nujoma's leadership of the Swapo-Party for a period of more than 40 years will be remembered by his contemporaries and the future generations, especially the difficult period of the armed liberation struggle from 26 August 1966 until the implementation of the United Nations' Independence Plan for Namibia, under the aegis of Resolution 435 in 1989.
