In this, the last of three little comments of the state of our politics in Namibia, we start off with the Namibia DMC.
The only thing this party seems to have going for it (if one call it that) is the presence of Joseph “with the multi-party turncoat” Kauandenge. He must really be clever because he has to keep so many manifestos and names in his head when he speaks nowadays. Joseph is a true democrat. If the party does not agree with him any more, he changes the party. The NDMC has now inherited him and we do not know who to pity more: him or the party.
The one thing no-one can take away from him is the fact that he is voluble (no! - not "valuable") – probably as voluble in most if not all respects as friend Malema down South.
As for the rest of the party? Who knows? The party is chauffeur-driven at this stage and mouthpiece Joseph shouts about the acquisition of a member of the COD. Joseph that is not a defector; that is a rat leaving the fast-sinking ship!
DAN, DPN and NDP leave me speechless and cold.
The CP leaves me historically impotent. The Workers' Revolutionary Party under Hewat Beukes could not scratch the political surface – even in cahoots with with any other party (such as SWANU). That was already communist in nature. Since then it has just gone further downwards … like onto a deep, dark and very slippery slope towards total oblivion. I doubt whether this Lazarus can do any better.
The COD (also lovingly known as “Crash on Delivery”). In 1989 or somewhere thereabouts when Ben Ulenga envisioned and founded the party it may have been a sincere attempt at proving a credible, viable and logical idea.
When only the disenchanted, tainted and the lunatic fringe jumped out of the woodwork to join the party, its demise was already in the stars. It managed to take some seats away from the DTA and could not make a dent in the solidarity of SWAPO. It has not managed to do any better since then.
Internal (e)ruptions, splits, animosities and rivalries have probably put paid to the party this time around.
A Kudo to SWANU: Some of its party members seem to be the only ones who have realised that being low on the list of only a minor party is more of a draw-back than a compliment. They have indicated “thanks but no thanks”! A wise move, indeed. Rather survive in your job and live to fight another day (year).
What now remains is the tatekulu of all parties: Swapo Party. There is actually little one can say that has not been said before. The vocal, but really tiny, minority is yapping at the heels of the bull are like little foxies – making some noise, but leaving little impression.
It does not take a crystal ball to know that Swapo will, again, sweep the board and may leave some crumbs for the others. All indications point that way.
The RPD is going all out to provoke Swapo supporters in various quarters of the country – especially in the northern parts... traditionally the stronghold of Swapo. Their actions remind me a lot of 1999 when the CoD used the resentment against the “traitors” to provoke and then come back screaming to Phil-istine Ya Nangolo(h) – Namibia's lonely “Human Rights” Crusader.
The next time I see Phil I will give him a big bag of salt. He can use that to judiciously add to the bleating that comes from the opposition about “actrocities” and “hate speech, intimidation, malicious destruction of property and provocations to violence” that are tattle-taled to his monitors and observers.
Swapo has the infrastructure and the organised volunteers and others that carry out the message loud and clear. Because of hard work over the past years this infratsructure is ready to use whenever it is needed and need not be scraped together out of the refuse bins of history, or from the depot of obsolete and dilapidated cadres of questionable morals and character.
If they can get their e-version of their manifesto into an e-mailable size, they will be nigh on perfect. You just can't compare a Ferrari to (broken) Mini!
See you after the election. I am convinced that in the ranks of the opposition there will be a lot of Weeping and Gnashing of Teeth after the votes have been counted and verified!
FIN
