John Ekongo Windhoek — The National Unity Democratic Organisation (Nudo) of Namibia, has, as a matter of urgency, requested the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) to remove duplicate and deceased voters from its recently released provisional voters' roll.

The provisional roll was availed by the election agency last week on Monday, for scrutiny by members of the public and political parties alike.

Nudo said that it has discovered a number of deceased voters and duplicate registrations after it conducted its own scrutiny of the provisional roll.

Making the announcement to the media, Meundju Jahanika, Nudo's Director of Elections said the appearance of deceased voters and duplicate registrations reflect that the voters' roll does not contain the true reflection of the exact number of voters.

"Another incident we came across is the dual registration of some voters; some voters are appearing twice on the voters' roll, same address, identity number and two different voter's numbers in the same constituency," stated Nudo's Director of Elections.

He felt incidents like these bring to doubt the figure of 1.3 million registered voters as reported by the ECN in its provisional voters' roll.

"Therefore, we urgently request the ECN to rectify the voters' roll and provide the political parties with a fresh and well-prepared voters' roll before the commencement of elections," stated Jahanika.

The party also called on the ECN to remove the names of deceased people from the roll, while requesting for an extension on dates for which the parties can scrutinise the voters' roll.

The party says the current deadline is too short.

ECN was not immediately available for comment at the time of going to print.
