  1. What is BuaNews?

    BuaNews is a South African government news service, published by the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS). The people of South Africa have a right to information, irrespective of their class, colour or creed. The Government has a mandate to ensure that its entire people have access to information. In order to make this possible, BuaNews was established to provide quick and easy access to articles and feature stories aimed at keeping the public informed about the implementation of government's mandate.

    An achievement of note for BuaNews was the clinching of a National Productivity Institute (NPI) Merit Award, in 2000, in recognition of the work it has done in disadvantaged communities.

    Our Mission:

    Continuously striving towards becoming the most efficient and dedicated channel, through which information reaches the most disadvantaged communities in South Africa.

    Our Vision:

    To create an awareness of news events, educate and bring information to those who do not have access to the mainstream media in an attempt to empower and provoke thought.

    What type of information does BuaNews distribute?

    It helps ensure wider dissemination of government information to provide citizens with the opportunity to gain access to development information and qualitative content to ensure that they are better informed to become active participants in the evolving process of social change.

    BuaNews provides the media with information related to developmental issues, health,education, service delivery, finance, government transformation, transport, defence, and welfare, among others. In addition, BuaNews features articles on community and people-centred initiatives that are aimed at improving or uplifting the quality of lives of the citizenry.

    How does BuaNews benefit communities?


    With three deadlines a day, BuaNews has become a fast, reliable and accurate government news and information service. It benefits communities in the following ways:
    - It creates an awareness on day-to-day issues
    - It informs people of that which will have an impact on their lives.
    - It educates people on various issues that are predominant in society.
    - It empowers: BuaNews empowers people by constantly making them aware of their human rights, their constitutional rights etc.

    Coverage of news events focuses on the promotion of interactive governance and unmediated communication between government and the people.

    Who receives BuaNews?

    BuaNews is posted online, emailed and faxed to community radio stations and print media, government communicators, freelance writers, Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs), news editors of the mainstream media, both pri nt and electronic, news agencies, missions and foreign media.

    Do I have to pay in order to receive BuaNews?

    Our clients receive information of the highest quality and standard at no cost. BuaNews is not profit-orientated and functions without advertising.

    What do I need to do in order to receive BuaNews?

    If you would like to subscribe to receive your free BuaNews editions via e-mail or fax, or if you would like to send us valuable information that we can use in our editions, please contact us. Any questions, comments and or suggestions on how we can improve our news service will be appreciated.

    Is BuaNews a government propaganda tool?

    Certainly not. The public's right to have access to government information is firmly entrenched in the constitution. Therefore, the government is duty-bound and obliged to communicate its policies, implementation of its mandate and their impact on the quality of life of the citizenry.

    BuaNews strives to fulfil government's mandate to make information accessible to the people of South Africa.

    Informed people are better equipped with knowledge to improve or uplift their standard of life.

    Development information enables citizens to become active participants in the evolving process of social change.

Fraud, corruption unit saves tax payers R18mil

Johannesburg - Tax payers have been saved over R18 million through work of the anti-fraud and corruption work of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) which investigated fraudulent housing subsidies.

The unit was commissioned in 2007 under former President Thabo Mbeki and Housing Minister Lindiwe Sisulu, to conduct investigations into low income housing subsidies between May 2007 and March 2009.

IMF warns Africa's growth will be affected by global crisis

Nairobi - The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that Africa's economic growth will be affected by the continuing world economic crisis.

It further predicted that growth in sub-Saharan Africa will slow to 3.25 percent this year, half the growth rate it previously projected.

Zim reports price decline in February

Harare - The Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ) has reported that falling prices of basic commodities has resulted in the breadbasket for a family of six for the month of February dropping by 20 percent to $122 from $153 in January.

It was a rare price decline for a country with the world's highest inflation rate at some 230 million percent, according to the last official estimates released in July last year.

This was the first decline in a decade.

Elections will not affect SA's response to economic crisis

Johannesburg - South Africa's efforts in dealing with the economic crisis will not be affected by the transition in government after the General Elections in April, says President Kgalema Motlanthe.
