dud, face book ROCKS
Is it only me or are you also a bit hesitant to take the plunge and join social networking sites such as FaceBook, MySpace, LinkedIn, etc?
I definitely have strong reservations and am not sure at all. The thing is: It's so easy to create an account, invite friends, share this, share that, post here, post there and do all sort of stuff. Not unlike Shebeen, which has similar functionality and tools.
But what if you want out once you have joine dthis virtual world? What if this thing suddenly takes over your life and people get peeved if you don't immediately reply to all sort of invitations/messages/posts .... Next thing you know you have 100 friends and spend hours or even days just networking and they can track your every move/post/message. Then you decide to "unfriend" someone, and next thing you know you have no "friends" left.
I kinda like the anonmity of sites like The Shebeen, and there is little danger fraudsters collecting any private information, unless I naively give it out. There is this superifical side to these sites, and it just does not sit comfortably with me. For one thing, you either have friends, or no friends. That's not like life at all. What do you think?

Social networking sites such as FaceBook and MySpace are there for purely commerical reasons. They exist to extract money from members or advertisers or transactions in one form or another.
That's fine by me, but think and more importantly read the fine print before you join. It may be difficult to extract yourself once you realise what you got yourself into!
THe thing about Facebook, MySpace and others is tha people are posting so many personal details on these social networking websites that the polic in many countries are having a really tough time trying to thwart and comabt outright identity fraud and theft.
A recent survey in the United Kingdowm apaprently showed that while 89 per cent of computer users in the Manchester region have installed security software, some 22 per cent ruin any good work by posting personal information on the internet like addresses, phone numbers or email addresses.
It also revealed one in five don't use privacy settings to block criminals viewing their details. THe police says that "there is now "good evidence" that ID fraud is on the increase with villains apparently "using Facebook to obtain personal details to clone credit cards and drain bank accounts."
Not for me thanks - I'll stick to THe Shebeen. It rocks!
One more reason I'm not on these sites: http://www.theshebeen.org/symantec/5...crush-you.html
Let's support home-grown initiatives like The Shebeen!!! It may not as yet offer the same functionality and tools and sophistication as FaceBook or MySpace or any of the other sites, but who knows maybe Shebeen has a trick up his sleeve?
Anyhow, the big social networking sites are like big black holes that suck in everything that comes their way. They take no prisoners and contribute to this mono-culture that is sweeping the globe. It's slowly making us all zombies of Western culture. I think this is even more reason to support initiatives by Africans for Africans. After all, LOCAL IS LEKKER!
On that note, Shebeen: What about more options on the profile pages like FaceBook has, and groups and all and maybe an e-mail account and webmail system with Shebeen? I like the new Karma thing and it looks like you want to keep improving things in our place.
I absolutely agree.Shebeen is homegrown and can't ask for more.I would appreciate it as well if more fun could be added, such as pimpin' my profile, lisening to home music etc.I know that things go step by step..no haste though just a contribution..anyways..im addicted to the Shebeen...

Both "Comrade_007" and "inny" have stripped everything down to the core. Yes, Facebook and MYSpace have millions of members, but I don't know 99,9999999999999% of them from a bar of soap.
After "talking" with Shebeeners for a few times one feels that one begin to know them. Often the anticipation of what a certain member (NO CRITICISM - just an example) may have come up with to defend his or her opinion, sometimes makes it worthwhile logging on........
Aah! I love word games........................
Inny and Comrade_007 and all other Shebeeners: We have taken note of your comments, feedback, ideas and requests. Thanks! You're on the ball. We do have some surprises up our sleeves, but can't say much at this stage because that would be jumping the gun.
All we can say is that the features and tools of Shebeen will be extended significantly once the code for it is ready. At the moment everything is still in so-called BETA stage, which may result in technical problems if we introduce the code to The Shebeen too soon. It'll be worth the wait, we promise!
We'll announce a few new features soon.
Best wishes,
Shebeen
