Default 100 oldest registered .com domains

This year it is 25 years ago that the first domains were registered. A geeky question:

Where were you in 1985 ... if born by then?

By then I was doing what I do now (writing) ... but on a 4.77 MHz PC with TWO 5 1/4" floppy drives, a 20MB hard drive and 512 kiB memory (which I expanded to 640 kiB)! The monitor was green and either 11 or 13 inches!!

It was computer heaven in those days!! My first word processor was called EasyWord and the whole programme fitted on a floppy AND I had plenty of space left for articles, etc!

Oh, before I forget: NO Windows then. The first Operating System I used happened to be DOS (3.2, I think), so it was all keyboard input ... the mouse came later.

Yes, you are right: Windows 1.0 (actually 1.01) did debut in 1985 too! It took most of us in Namibia a little bit to catch up. Most of us starting using Windows only when 3.0/3,1 came onto the market!

Here are the domains in order of registration:

Man oh man - How I remember the hours spent typing page after page of machine code (with a checksum at the end of each line) for some simple but exhilarating game with up to eight sprites and all on my trusted and much-loved Commodore 64. Those were the days of true computing, sweat and all!!

Hm, must have been PC-DOS 3.2 then, as that was released in December 1985. MS-DOS came in January 1986. I still remember going through endless troubles with the harddisk, as it practically died a most mysterious but pretty regular death after a year or so. Imagine this "failure rate" with modern multi-Terrabyte drives ;-) I think we could witness a sky full of flying laptops - thrown out of windows basically every 2-3 minutes XD

At that stage in life, permanent companions on my PC were WordStar, dBase III, SideKick and Turbo Pascal was added to that list just a year later (still owner of the manual for the 3.01A version - in surprisingly good condition, even after nearly 25 years and having been used on a daily basis for more than 4 years before I replaced it with Turbo Pascal 6.0 in 1990).

Golden times indeed - what a great fun we had with the PC's then. And those totally bewildered looks of other users, who just could not understand at all, why we were enduring all those hardships (parity errors on memory modules, harddisk failures, unreadable floppy disks, and the works) with a smile on our faces, ready to jump under the hood of the next PC to figure out what went wrong there...

Just to think of it, that even the most basic memory stick today (hard to find anything below 4GB) can hold more than 200 times the amount of data than the largest available harddrives at that time - and we actually thought that 20 MB would be "more than enough for everything" ;-)
