Charming, very charming - right up Mugabe's street. Just a song, I suppose, but why would he want to choose this song if there are thousands of others to choose, like the national anthem? And how exactly does it fit into the wider policy of national reconciliation? Help me out here......

Since I have been reliably informed that "Malema"means "idiot" in Ndebele I don't think it is even worth wondering about what may have inspired him .............

The Mail & Guardian newspaper in South Africa asked five high-profile experts on freedom of speech, constitutional law and both Afrikaner and black nationalism what they thought of Malema's recent bursts into song.

    * Hermann Giliomee, historian and author of Afrikaners: Biography of a People, said the song was "dangerous and likely to incite some people"

    * Pierre de Vos, constitutional law lecturer at the University of Cape Town, said songs like these were sung at a specific time "when an apartheid government needed to be overthrown. Because we are in a democracy, there is no need for those songs. If you follow human rights, Mr Mantashe's defence will not hold -- apartheid is no more." Because of Malema's history and the insecurity of minority groups in the country, "some people are reacting to the person saying it", instead of what is being said, De Vos said.

    * Melissa Moore, acting director of the Freedom of Expression Institute, said, "It is extremely worrying that the leaders of our country view this kind of speech as acceptable. This indicates a blatant disregard and disrespect for fundamental human rights and the well-being of South African society. "Malema's statement amounts to hate speech, which is a form of speech that is not protected by the Constitution. Section 16(2) (c) of the Constitution prohibits the advocacy of hatred that is based on race, ethnicity, gender, religion and that constitutes incitement to cause harm. The statement clearly incites harm to a specific group of people based on their race and ethnicity. Such speech should not be condoned and should not go unpunished."

    * Zandi Radebe, spokesperson for Blackwash, a Black Consciousness youth social movement based in Soweto, said, "Malema's behaviour is predictable." Blackwash condemns any hate speech, regardless of who it comes from. "For me the issue is: Why do we continuously applaud the behaviour of people like Julius Malema? He makes the same noise and we give him the same reaction, I'm really tired of this."

    * Jane Duncan, professor of journalism at Rhodes University, said, "Struggle songs help people to remember the spirit of resistance that led to South Africa's transition to democracy. For as long as South Africa remains untransformed on many levels of the social formation -- for instance, racism or economic inequalities remain -- these songs will continue to be sung, as people take courage from the spirit of resistance from the past to overcome the injustices of the present." "The song as sung by Mokaba could not be considered hate speech, even when people sung it at Mokaba's funeral, and the Human Rights Commission [HRC] erred in making this judgement at the time. In order for speech to constitute incitement to cause harm, specific targets of that harm need to be identified. The song cannot be said to be directed at specific individuals, and in fact, the song is strongly metaphorical in that it refers to the system of apartheid being killed, so the specificity of speech that is necessary for something to constitute incitement to cause harm was absent.

I see big trouble coming here, and I suppose I'm not the first one to do so either. Emotions are running high on all sides, and common sense does unfortunately not seem to prevail. Where are the voices of reason? My own personal opinion: The consensus and "reconciliation" - rainbow nation - politics that the ANC pursued to a large extent under Mandela and Mbeki is unraveling. Have the political thugs on all sides arrived? Just how raw the emotions are is evident, and the inability of both sides to come to a common understanding of the matter and move forward in the interest of the country is of great concern. The one side is pointing fingers; the other side is showing the middle finger in return. How is that going to resolve anything?

ANCYL Refuses to Accept Afriforum Memo - Again

Johannesburg — The ANC Youth League refused to accept a memorandum listing farm murders at Luthuli House today.

The ANC Youth League once again refused to accept an Afriforum memorandum detailing recent farm murders when representatives were turned away in Johannesburg this morning.

Afriforum national youth chairman Ernst Roets says the group was refused entry to ANC headquarters, Luthuli House, which was surrounded by police.

"ANC officials and police told us we were not welcome and when we attempted to give them the list of farm attack victims they took the list and threw it into the street and literally stamped on it," Roets said.

The handing over of the memorandum was in response to the recent singing of "kill the farmers they are rapists" by ANCYL president Julius Malema.

In response to Afriforum's statements, ANCYL spokesperson Floyd Shivambu told Business Day Online that did Afriforum not have the proper authorisation to march on Luthuli House and were told to leave.

"They are just a bunch white children marching illegally. We will never accept a memo from a group of racist children," Shivambu said.

But Roets told Business Day Online that the rejection of a peaceful memorandum was "..spitting in the face of those murdered.." and that Afriforum would not stop their campaign against the singing of "Kill the Farmer" by Malema.

Ultimately, nothing will come of it.

One difference between "African" democracy and "Western" democracy is accountability. A scandal the likes of Zuma's Rape and Shower episode, or Malima's Kill the Boer hate speech will peminantly end the career of a politician in any Western nation.

These things are in all propability going to INCREASE his popularity.

In Namibia we also have laws against racist actions. I have yet to see those laws used to prosecute Sam Nujoma for his repeated derogatory use of the name "Boers" - or as he says, "Boors". Used in the contects he used it, it has a similar negative connection to a whiteman calling a black a "******" If I were to do THAT publically, I would be prosecuted.

It is my believe that these "liberation" politicians have to continually portray the whites as perpetual villians, the source of all their problems past and present. If you "dehumanise" your enimy, it becomes easier to 'opress" that group. The general population will think they "deserve" what they get. Now AA can progress into Forced Land Reform, which can go to Forced Equity handover in white owned businesses..... (Case study: Zimbabwe)

Why do you think Namibian Politicians and their propaganda machinery (Read: NBC) have to remind us DAYLY of how the blacks were opressed by a regeme that completely ended 20 years and 1 day ago........?

    I know the answer.....

Hulleis nie gepla nie, Magcutey, want hulle weetdat daar niemand is om hulle accountable te hou. Dit begin met 'n song end dit eindig met 'n klomp trane.
