Forgive me for being so ignorant, Magcutey - but who are the contenders? Do you know?

According to the Marketing Consultant of the Sanlam-NBC Music Award Committee, Angrid van Rensburg, the awards introduced six nominees in categories which received more than 20 entries while those categories that had less than 20 entries will remain with a maximum of four as in the past.

Sanlam was always ready to explain to the public the formost criteria for winning the award was highest total sales, which was clearly achieved by Stanley, including having a resounding fan base(who doesn't listen to his funky tunes?), but they seem to have forgotten this time around and even bypassed Gazza, who has done more overall as an artist and awarded Dog, who has only 1 niglegible song for 2007, beats me really

Good Morning Peter, the Sanlam NBC Music Awards (2009) for this year has not as yet been launched but is due to be launched on this coming Friday (14 August 2009) , so there are no Finalists available as yet. This will be made available only at least 3 week after the launch.

The Sanlam/Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) Music Awards 2009 were launched here on Friday.

Acting Director-General (DG) of the NBC Mathew //Gowaseb said in a speech read on his behalf by NBC Corporate Communications Manager Cecil Nguvauva that the music industry has made a footprint, and continues to grow from year to year, with many artists that have excelled in their music careers.

“The Sanlam/NBC Music Awards has provided that platform to further develop that same footprint,” he added.
Gowaseb said seven years back, not as many music/night clubs would play local music, and not many radio stations would promote local artists.

“Today, our local radio stations now have “countdowns” of Namibian artists (and their songs). Namibians are now playing local albums in their cars, and corporate companies now associate local artists with their image. This is evidence that the industry is a market that is an investment,” said //Gowaseb.

He stressed that the objectives of the Sanlam/NBC Music Awards include encouraging, rewarding and recognizing Namibian music artists for producing creative and entertaining music, and creating a platform for established and up-and-coming musicians to perform to a wider audience.

Other objectives include encouraging and motivating the general Namibian public to appreciate Namibian music and musicians, and to bring about entertainment for the audiences and viewers at home.

Also speaking at the event, Marketing and Communications Consultant at Sanlam Namibia Angrid Shimuafeni said four categories have been added to this year's awards.

These are Best Jazz, Best Kizomba, Best Township Disco and Best Song-writer.

Shimuafeni noted that changes were also made to the Song of the Year category, saying each local radio station will choose their five best songs, after which the judges will make a selection of the top five Only then can the public vote in the category through short message services (SMSs).

“Members of the public can only vote once for a particular song,” she stressed, adding that a panel of judges will decide the Artist of the Year.

According to Shimuafeni, changes were also made to the panel of judges, saying local experts in various music genres will make up the judging panel.

She, therefore, called on all artists, existing and up-and-coming, to take part in the awards slated for 04 December at the National Theatre of Namibia.

Well, It will beat me if other artists enter considering Sanlam has a selct few artists always walking with the price though they claimed the artist with the most sales takes the ultimate prize, and walla, last yr Stanley cracked it but award went to none other than... I rest my case.....

Other events on the music scence however seem to go very well on an annual basis, e.g. The Old Mutual Jazz festival!!! wow, what an innitiative hey, promotes music that is mostly not all noise, though I think Old mutual should appreciate local talent, not only through getting them on stage and paying them serious peanuts in comparison to the south african artis. Fair enough the argument would be that RSA artists are renowned/more famous than our own, but Namibian fraterny has the sole responsibility to help promote local talent,therefor should up the LOCAL ARTIST fees to something more substantial....
