Ecosia[/URL][/B] is an independent, non-profit website. At least 80% of their search income goes to a rainforest protection program run by WWF, which uses this money for the sustainable protection of rainforests. Their Statistics are impressive. As of today:
- Total Rainforest Saved - Rainforest area that has so far been saved by your searches: 26,491,650 yd˛
- Total Incoming Searches - Number of searches so far conducted with ecosia: 11,376,143
- Saved Rainforest Per Search - The average rainforest area saved by one search: 2.33 yd˛
- Active Ecosia Users - People who have accessed ecosia within the last 24h : 54,043
Although these figures are dwarfed by the major search engines, this is a cause worth supporting. I installed the browser plugin and search results are very good. Ecosia is powered by Microsoft's bing and Yahoo.
Ecosia apparently earns money from clicks on the sponsored links on the search result pages, which are displayed next to the generic search results. Each click on one of these sponsored links generates a few cents of revenue for them. About two percent of the search requests end up with a click on a sponsored link.
They then donate at least 80 percent of this money to rainforest protection project run by the WWF. The project is located in the Juruena national park. It costs only 49 Namibia Dollar to protect an entire hectare of rainforest there. So based on our average earnings per search, Ecosia says it can save about two square meters for each search you do.
