Default With Nokia you can now go around the bend

Nokia files Patent on Flexible Device Technologies

Nokia are up to something, and it sure is interesting. Looks like the Nokia Morph Concept nanotechnology is materialising. Nokia has just filed a Patent on a technology whereas an object can be used in an array of devices such as music, and media players, mobile computers, and of course, mobile phones. Basically what this technology can do, is determine what you want from the device by simply phyisically bending the device in a series of ways. Bending it in a concave position will list local bars and resturants, be it physically showing it on the display, or speaking aloud to the user. Bending it convex will list night clubs etc.

Obviously this technology will be used for far more than just finding somewhere to eat, or listen to loud music, and dance, it opens up the possibilities for disabled users, especially those who have problems with sight, their hands/fingers for example.

Here are some abstracts from the Patent application.

A user interface including a flexible display configured to display graphical objects and a controller configured to detect a first bend and determine a resulting first foldline, determine a graphical object being intersected by the first foldline and execute a function associated with the graphical object.

A computer readable medium as in claim 38 further comprising software code configured to detect a variation in said first bend and determine a resulting second foldline and determine a second graphical object being intersected by said second foldline and wherein said function is associated with or executed on said second graphical object.

In recent years, considerable progress has been made towards the development of thin and flexible displays. For example, it is known to have a display device assembly comprising a flexible display device being rollable around an axis. A range of flexible electronic devices based on these technologies, including full color, high-resolution flexible organic light emitting diode, OLED, displays with a thickness of 0.2 mm are being introduced to the market. The goal of such efforts is to provide displays with superior handling, contrast and flexibility.

So there you have it folk's, looks like Nokia are certainly working hard behind the scenes on these new technologies, which we normally only see in Sci-Fi movies, Nokia is slowly enabling fiction into reality.
