The Rally for Democracy and Progress, RDP, has called upon people who have influence on the SWAPO Party to act, charging that some party members could turn the country into a besieged fortress of violence and turmoil.
RDP Khomas Regional Coordinator, Jeremia Nambinga, made the appeal following Saturday's incident in Windhoek where SWAPO members prevented the RDP from holding a public rally.
Nambinga says if such actions are not contained, they have the potential to cause chaos in a free Namibia.
He observes that the RDP is a legally constituted and registered political party with the constitutional rights and obligations to carry out its political activities without fear or intimidation.
"What is at stake in our country today is the future of democracy and on this we cannot compromise. Equally we would like to tell the nation that the RDP will continue to scrupulously respect the constitution and the laws of the Republic of Namibia," he said.
Nambinga says unwarranted provocation by what he terms some well-known SWAPO extremists must be condemned with the contempt it deserves.
He was speaking at a media briefing in the capital on Sunday.
