Christine Briedenhann of the Namibia Swimming Academy was the star swimmer at two Age Group Galas at the Western Suburbs Swimming Pool on Friday and Saturday.

Briedenhann set the only record of the weekend when she broke her elder sister Jonay’s 200m freestyle record for Girls 12 and under on Saturday.

Christine completed the event in a time of 2:24,82, which was nearly three seconds faster than Jonay’s five-year-old record of 2:27,63.

Christine also came desperately close to breaking the Women’s 12 and under 200m Individual medley record of Namibian legend, Monica Dahl. Dahl’s record, which was set more than 20 years ago stands at 2:40,26, while Christine’s winning time was 2:40,31.

In other noteworthy performances, Byron Briedenhann of the NSA won the Men’s 17-18 year 200m backstroke in 2:21,64, which was just outside Stefan van Zijl’s national record of 2:21,57.
Byron also came close to the Men’s 17-18 year old 200m IM record of 2:17,99 set by Derrick Langford in 2000, when he won in a time of 2:20,32.

Jonay Briedenhann of the NSA won the women’s 17-18 year 200m backstroke in 2:38,94, finishing outside Monica Dahl’s national record of 2:32,05.
Jonay also came close to her own women’s 17-18 year old 200m IM record of 2:28,92 when she won in a time of 2:33,02.

Jean Paul Burger of Dolphins won the Men’s 12 and under 200m backstroke in a time of 2:53,52, which was within striking distance of Abraham Louw’s national record of 2:47,96 which he set in 2003.
