For the first time ever, Namibia will have representation at the Junior World Championships for Road Cycling. Held under the auspices of the international cycling federation, UCI, this event is the pinnacle for junior cyclists from around the globe. Normally held in countries with a strong cycling culture, the event takes place in Cape Town, South Africa, as part of the UCI’s efforts to globalize cycling.

For Namibia this is a big opportunity to expose its junior cyclists to world-class competition, and the Namibian Cycling Federation has jumped at the chance. Five young scholars have made the final cut to represent their country at this prestigious event. For the last four months, they have been submitted to rigorous training under the watchful eyes of their coaches, often riding as much as 30 hours a week while still attending school. To compete at this level is a huge commitment, particularly as many countries will be fielding teams that are semi-professional. Nonetheless, the Namibian contingent is undaunted, as their training has gone well.

The five youngsters are Stefan Marggraff, Heiko Redecker, Jacobus van Zyl, Florian Drobisch and Mirko Maier. Stefan, Heiko and Jacobus will participate in the Road Race over 136 km, while Florian and Mirko will do battle in the Individual Time Trial over 26.8 km. They are accompanied by team manager Harald Marggraff, who will be assisted by Douwleen van Zyl. Although the riders have no illusions about the depth of talent they will encounter, they are well prepared for their events and hope to finish high in the country rankings.

The team departs for Cape Town on Wednesday, where they will make final preparations. The Time Trial is on Friday, while the Road race takes place on Sunday afternoon.
