Thread: The Zimbabwe Situation

As I write this late on Sunday night all indications are of landslide win by the opposition MDC. But will ZANU-PF and mugabe accept the result, or will there be a military coup? The country is on a knife's edge. I hope reason and sense prevails. It appears that the people have spoken loudly and clearly through the ballot box: It is time for Mugabe and ZANU-PF to go.

These figures are compiled from offocial results posted outside polling stations throughout Zimbabwe.

Mark my words: The rigging of election results currently underway in ZImbabwe will ensure victory for ZANU-PF and Mugabe. These "results" will be announced tomorrow in a coreographed fashion by the state media, with a quick swearing-in ceremony for Mugabe. The figures will fly in the face of official results posted at polling stations. All and everyone who naively had hoped for anything else will once again be reminded that absolute power corrupts absoluteyl, to the extent that "elections" are managed affairs and stage-managed political theatre. But then, this is Africa, and in Africa we go through the charade of elections so we can pretend we are democrats. We all know the MDC and Tsvangirai won, and that the strong men with the guns once again prevail. It will be time for South Africa to switch off the electricity. Anything else will mean complicity in this obvious, shameless, callous charade of an election.

Dude - stop die lorrie as they say. I sense your frustration and agree with some of your sentiments, but there yet remains a chance that ZANUOF and Mugabe will realise ther time is indeed finally over. Klaar gelag. Unlike last time there are apparently not as many polic and soldiers on the streets, so maybe the security people have also realised that the game is up. Finish and out So, let us wait and see.

Good Idea. If all so called democratic countries can allow "SUPER UNTAG" to conduct elections in their countries what is wrong with that. This include Uncle Sam (USA). Who says they don't rigg elections? Don't tell me the cost does not warrant that. There is a cost associated to every election and can be contributed towards a Election Execution Agency eqquiped with all the neccesary tools to conduct elections on an agreed failsafe process in all countries who claims to be democratic.

Here we are speculating that Mugabe and ZANU-PF will rigg the vote, and all indications so far is that they will.

But there seems to be a change in tone, if not heart.

Mugabe actually said at a ralley in Bulawayo today that he expects the MDC to win the vote. I couldn't believe my ears, but this is what he said: "This time we are sure the MDC is going to win, ZANU-PF is split, split into two and some of the top leaders have left,". Could this be the beginning of the end for Mugabe and ZANU-PF? Have they finally seen that their end has come? If so, then there is yet hope that MDC will win and the result will be accepted.

I think this is what Oneword is alluding to: The possibility that although the vote itself will be deeply flawed, the parties will accept an MDC/Tsvangirai victory. Picture this: MDC/Tsvangirai win the elections, Mugabe accepts defeat and urges his party and its followers and the security establihsment to respect the result. Suddenly he is the democrat, the hero who was villified (also by myself I must admit) and can parade himself to the world as such. Mugabe is thus rehabilitated te hero he proclaims to be and can retire as an elder statesman. All his critics are left with egg on theifaces. Or is Mugabe bluffing? How do you read his comments?

Sure of the thousands of bad things done by mugabe the one good thing (admitting defeat without voilence) may restore his image and respect. Either way if he seeked imortality he'll get it. Another thought is do you remember all the villians of the past the world over let's say in the past 100 years? If you can good for you, now try to remember all the good guys. My list is shorten than the evil do'ers.
